This course provides participants with an overview of supporting family-centered practice in training speech-language pathologists who are interested in working in Early Intervention. The course was developed both for graduate students in speech-language pathology programs interested in learning more about working with Early Intervention Populations and speech-language pathologists who are working with Early Intervention Populations and are interested in providing internship experiences for graduate students.

Instructor Bios

Katie Strong, Ph.D. CCC-SLP is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Disorders at Central Michigan University. In 2015, she received her doctorate in Interdisciplinary Health Sciences from Western Michigan University where her dissertation focused on exploring the co-construction of personal narratives to support reconstruction of identity in persons with aphasia. Katie received her Master of Arts Degree in Speech-Language Pathology from Kansas State University in 1992 and her Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology from Washington State University. She holds ASHA certification and licensure in Michigan as a speech-language pathologist. She has worked clinically for 23 years and has expertise in working with a wide range of clients from pediatrics to adults. Katie was formerly the Graduate Program Director for Michigan State University’s Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders where she established an off-campus training program for an accredited program. While employed at MSU, a portion of her salary was paid for by a grant from the Early On Center for Higher Education to support this project. She has served as a consultant for clinical education for St. Mary’s College. Additional professional activities include: Treasurer, Council of Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders; Former Vice Chair, Michigan Speech-Language Pathology Licensure Board; Michigan’s Early On Center for Higher Education Advisory Council; American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Leadership Development Program graduate; AphasiaAccess Affiliate and Education and Research Subcommittee; and Academy of Neurologic Communication Disorders and Sciences member. Katie is the owner of Strong Speech Consulting, Inc., which is a speech-language pathology private practice.

Shirley N. Sparks, M.S., CCC-SLP graduated with a bachelor's degree in speech pathology from the University of Iowa and moved to New Orleans. There, she held various jobs as a speech-language pathologist, raised a family and received a master's degree from Tulane University. When the family moved to Omaha, she taught part time at the University of Nebraska for four years.  In 1976, the family moved again, this time to Battle Creek, Mich. She began working at Western Michigan University’s speech pathology and audiology department initially as a supervisor of students, and she ultimately became a tenured speech pathology and audiology associate professor until her early retirement in 1991.During her career, Sparks noted the importance of staying abreast of developments in the field of speech pathology by attending and participating in the American Speech-Language Hearing Association annual convention and other professional meetings. Upon retiring from WMU in 1991, Sparks and her family relocated to California, where she continues to practice her vocation today. She works as an adjunct professor of early childhood special education at Santa Clara University and has been a home visiting speech-language pathologist. She co-authored the recently released book The Art and Practice of Home Visiting: Early Intervention for Special Needs Children and Families.

Kittie Butcher has a Bachelor of Arts from Central Michigan University in Human Ecology.  Currently she is an Educator of Children Youth and Families with MSU Extension in Clinton County. Kittie receives a salary from MSU and a portion of her salary was paid for with a grant from the Early On Center for Higher Education to complete this project. Kittie has extensive experience as a parent educator, providing parent/child groups and conducting developmental early childhood screenings in her work with Early On.  She has worked as the trainer for Talaris Parenting Counts and developed emotion coaching trainings for childcare educators.  She has conducted numerous training workshops for professionals and parents on various topics including language development and emergent literacy skills and emotion coaching. She has planned and executed many train the trainer sessions through her collaboration with WKAR’s Ready to Learn program.
